Wisdom Wednesday

My child, don't lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are like jewels on a necklace. They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble. You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly. You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked, for the LORD is your security. He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap. Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it's in your power to help them. If you can help your neighbor now, don't say, "Come back tomorrow, and then I'll help you." Don't plot harm against your neighbor, for those who live nearby trust you. Don't pick a fight without reason, when no one has done you harm. Don't envy violent people or copy their ways. Such wicked people are detestable to the LORD, but he offers his friendship to the godly. The LORD curses the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the upright. The LORD mocks the mockers but is gracious to the humble. The wise inherit honor, but fools are put to shame!

The Message translates verse 27 this way:

Never walk away from someone who deserves help;
your hand is God's hand for that person.

This is how I feel

It's been a rough weekend. I don't feel well...haven't felt well. I was talking with my girlfriend Marsha last night. She lost her husband to pancreatic cancer in October. And a few weeks later, she was diagnosed with cancer herself. Last night, we were talking about how much we missed our husbands and how hard it is to be alone. But that somehow, it's so much worse when you don't feel well. Yeah. To be sick and alone really stinks.

I heard this song on the radio a couple of weeks ago and it has been playing over and over in my head. So, without any more depressing thoughts from me - here's this week's Music Monday selection:

Pride and Joy

Congratulations to our youngest son, Matthew! Yesterday afternoon at 1:30, he stood before his Committee and presented his Dissertation Proposal. White knuckle stuff to be sure, but also the beginning of the home stretch in his work toward his Ph.D. (Secretly, I knew he'd be brilliant...but then, I'm his mother so I know these things!)

This next year will be spent conducting yet more research, writing yet more articles for publication in scientific journals (yes, he is a published author at 25) and training yet more undergrad students. And hopefully, having some fun along the way. (Remember son, life is all about balance!)

I told him the night before his presentation that I'd be praying for him (although I knew he'd be brilliant!) and that I also knew that if there was a way, his Dad would be in that room, right alongside of him...hanging on his every word and cheering him on! Because that's one of the things my Sweet Hubby did best and because he was just so gosh darn proud of this son of ours!

You can take a deep breath, Matthew...this phase is behind you! So my eyes are on the future now and I can't help but look ahead to next May as you receive your Ph.D. and I can say (just once, okay?!) my son - the "doctah!" Well, maybe twice - because your Dad wanted to say it too!

Love you son...you've made us proud your whole life and you just keep on rollin'!

So this is definitely a PRAISE REPORT!!!

Hallelujah and thank you Lord!!! My deepest thanks to all of you who have been praying for "my" little Guithe. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I would ask that you continue to pray...and if you're able to make a financial offering as well - that would be fantastic. There are a number of organizations that are in place in Haiti and doing good work there...World Vision (near and dear to my heart!), Compassion, Samaritan's Purse, the American Red Cross, Unicef, to name just a few.

Because while this is a PRAISE REPORT (!!!) the news is still bittersweet...

"As of now, all sponsored children in Haiti have been confirmed safe, although many have suffered great loss."

Great loss...that could mean their homes and everything they own - which is not much to begin with. It could also mean their families - parents, brothers, sisters...

We've all seen the pictures. It goes far beyond devastation and really, there just are no words.

So, we'll pray and as we're led...give.
